Yes, the 2800G is very fussy about ADSLmax. There are also problems
with its Wireless when using some chipsets and drivers.
Are you aware that most of the recent ones have a choice of different
firmwares to try in case of problems? I can't think of any other
manufacturer that offers that.

No, I haven't. Voip.co.uk's notes say to not use STUN. I could easily
forward the packets using my router though. I wouldn't have thought that
was the reason for outbound calls not working, but I may be wrong.
Is there is long list of ports, or is it just the ones listed in the Siemens
phone's configuration page? |

For what it's worth, I got a Gigaset in for evaluation and had it up and
running with voip.co.uk within about 10 mins.
Regrettably, I now have to go into 'useless mode' as I do not have the
phone to hand to check its settings for you - but have some cheer that
it *should* work! |

For what it's worth my UTstarcom refused to connect with voip.co.uk
when I first bought it but would connect with others I gave up in the
end and just left it on the desk picked up again 30 minutes later and
all was working. Chris at ukvoip told me the other day that sometimes
their systems need a little time to think about things ))) . |

Is that voip.co.uk? If so, then it may be some consolation. I really feel
that since the system is finding the server, it must be the other end that's
causing the problem. |

You don't have to forward ports on voip.co.uk.
Using stun with voip.co.uk is definitely going to cause you problems.

ALG - application layer gateway. Software in the the router that is
meant to help SIP work through the NAT.
In practice, most SIP ALG's are fundamentally broken and do more bad
than good.

Just to let everyone know that this problem is now fixed, thanks to the
people at voip.co.uk. The reason was because our local LAN uses IP
addresses in the range 192.1.1.x and these aren't private addresses
apparently.
It's a historic thing and one that's difficult for me to change. So, I've
set the phone to use a its default static address of 192.168.2.2 and
adjusted to router to use 255.0.0.0 as the network mask, to allow it to
route everthing on the network.
Thanks for all your help - it's much appreciated. |

Yes you can, but it requires careful doing.
Tim
I use voipcheap for sending occasional faxes with a Fritzbox. I have not
changed any settings to accomodate fax.
HOWEVER, expect it to take multiple attempts and a lot longer than you
would expect. I find it OK for faxes every now and again but nothing
more. There is a previous thread in the group about Vonage's "dedicated"
FoIP service, but it doesn't sound like it's any different to my setup. I
think they call this emerging technology, but converting data to analogue
audio to IP packets and then back again sounds like a recipe for disaster
to me.
|
Someone just needs to write software that emulates a fax modem and then
simply connects to a SIP provider to make the call and send the fax. |

I have a Linksys SPA3102 on its way to me. I am going to use it with
VoipDicount. At the moment I am using VopiDiscount via a Linksys PAP2T (see
my previous post "Starting Again") but now want to integrate my BT Line.
Setting up the SPA3102 to use VoipDiscount will not be a problem as there
are some configuration settings on their page.
However I want to set it up so that all landline calls to the UK, Singapore
and Malaysia go out via VoipDiscount and all others go out via my BT Line.
For this I think I need to use Dial Plans (but not certain!) If the SPA3102
is anything like the PAP2 it will come with zero instructions.
Am I right that I need to use dialling plans and can anyone point me to a
page that explains how I can achieve this?
Thanks
|
The manuals can be found on the Linksys website. Also in here:
http://www.provu.co.uk/support.html
The dialplan can be complicated but it just requires a bit of patience
to get right.
cheers,
Paul. |

More like someone needs to write a working t.38 implementation for
Asterisk. Software that emulates a fax modem and then sends the data
over an IP connection using SIP will just run into all the same problems
an ATA with a fax machine plugged into it using g.711 codec currently
does. The problem is a fax transmission relies on near-perfect timing
at either end which is fine with analogue phone lines or ISDN. But IP
(and therefore the Internet) is a best-effort service which was designed
from the ground up with little or no consideration to synchronised
timing at both ends of a connection.
cheers,
Paul. |
